Multi-Purpose Actuator Enables Ball Valve to Open and Close Automatically

A major southern grow operation needed a valve to open and close automatically on a series of remote fertigation pipelines. The lines were in a location where compressed air and electricity were both unavailable and impractical. It was essential to have the valve close whenever the water supply dropped below operational pressure, to prevent the percentage of nutrients from exceeding safe levels and harming the crop.

Using a Series ABVS Air x Spring Actuated Ball Valve and a series of common tubing lines, the grower was able to substitute water pressure for compressed air directly to the "air to open" side of the actuator. When water flow is diverted to the remote piping from the grower's central control system, the 40 PSI line pressure automatically opens the valve, allowing nutrients to flow to the eductors.

When water is diverted elsewhere or the pump is turned off, the line pressure holding the valve open drops below 40 PSI. The absence of pressure enables an isolated spring on the "spring to close" side of the actuator to automatically move the valve to a fully closed position, protecting the plants.

Editorial: How/When/Where to Specify Air Release & Degassing Valves

An Air Release Valve is open when the system is depressurized. At start up, the liquid process forces most of the air in the pipeline to high points, where the ARV allows it to escape. Once liquid rises, the valve closes and will not allow anything – gas or liquid – to pass in or out. It will not vent gas as it occurs during daily operations. It will reopen only when the system is depressurized and liquid level drops.

Automatic Ball Valve Ensures Pump Prime

12.04.2023 -

In this chemical bulk handling application, a ball-type check valve was specified as a foot valve to provide continuous pump prime. The centrifugal pump will not self-prime, and if it runs dry will result in seal failure. Prolonged operation in a dry condition is likely to result in catastrophic failure.

Editorial: The Importance of Default Position in a Valve

The illustration shows two pressure control valves. These are very similar but for the fact that one is normally-open and the other is normally-closed. The primary difference between the valves is the location of main orifice in relation to the spring, piston, and valve seat (or seal). Because these valves use liquid pressure to automatically overcome the pre-set spring force, the liquid moves the normally-closed valve to open, and the normally-open valve to close.
