Hydraulic Institute & Pump Systems Matter Offer New Course

Pump Systems Matter and the Hydraulic Institute are offering a new one-day course designed to help pump users learn how to identify and reduce hidden operating and energy costs in their pumping systems, and ultimately increase their profitability.

The course will also help pump users more effectively communicate with customers, distributors and vendors by imparting the critical knowledge needed to present and discuss energy-savings opportunities.

According to Robert Asdal, Executive Director of Pump Systems Matter and the Hydraulic Institute, “The average pumping system is typically not optimized for best efficiency. Pumping systems, under such conditions, become a drain on profitability. Overall, the pumping system will be less reliable if not optimized for energy savings and best efficiency using a life cycle approach. This course helps pump users better understand the significant opportunities associated with improving pump systems performance. It’s a great way to improve profitability now, when every bottom-line dollar really counts.”

The new course, Pumping System Optimization: Opportunities to Improve Life Cycle Performance represents a wise time and dollar investment for both companies and individuals. The course is reasonably priced, and attendees will gain a new awareness of the skills they’ll need to help improve efficiency in their pumping systems and reduce energy and operating costs. Attendees will also earn seven professional development hour credits (PDH) from the Hydraulic Institute after completing the course.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, in the United States industrial sector alone, pumping systems account for almost 25% of all energy consumed by electric motors, and for over 50% of the electricity in certain pump-intensive industries such as municipal water and wastewater. The typical medium-sized plant spends over $1.4 Million each year on energy to run their pumping system. Better system design and optimized pumping systems could result in an average energy savings of 20% - 25% or more, about $350K per year.

The new course will cover a number of key optimization topics: Why Efficient Pumping Systems Are Important; Systems Optimization and Improvement Opportunities; Basic Pump Systems Interaction; Screening Pumping Systems; Analysis Tools for Pumping Systems; Improving the Performance of Pumping Systems; Life Cycle Cost Analysis; Developing an Action Plan; Resources and Follow –up Strategies; New ANSI Pump Systems Energy Assessment Standard; and more.

The day-long course will be taught by Pump Systems Matter qualified instructors. Students will receive a Participants Guide and take part in group exercises during the program. They will also receive a copy of “Optimizing Pumping: A Guide for Improved Energy Efficiency, Reliability and Profitability” along with a copy of the PSM “Pump Systems Assessment Guide,” a resource document to identify where to find other valuable tools on-line.

Pump Systems Matter and HI will host the course in five regional areas in 2010: Parsippany, NJ - May 11; Chicago – May 18; Ft. Worth – June 8; Wilmington, DE – June 23; and Charleston, SC – August 10. Classes are limited to twenty-five attendees.

The Hydraulic Institute and PSM are also offering the opportunity for interested companies, electric power utilities, energy efficiency NGOs and state energy offices to host the course in their service territory, or present the course for their own group of employees and/or customers. PSM will provide a qualified instructor, course materials, marketing materials, training solutions, and other essential materials as needed.
