Voith Hydro Signs 443 Million Euro Contract

Voith Hydro has signed a contract with the Brazil energy company Norte Energia to supply the planned hydro power project Belo Monte in the North of the country.

With the contract, Voith Hydro further develops its already strong position in the South American market.

Voith Hydro - as part of a consortium consisting of Alstom and Andritz - will be technical leader for the project and will supply four Francis turbine-generator sets, as well as all high voltage transformers. Moreover, Voith Hydro is to supply the entire Automation systems for the power plant. The contract’s order value for Voith Hydro amounts to around 443 million Euro.

In total, the planned Belo Monte power plant will have 18 turbine-generator sets, with a capacity of 611 megawatts each. Upon its expected completion in 2019, it will be the world’s third-largest hydro power plant, with a planned capacity of 11,230 MW.

The Belo Monte project belongs in the context of the highly ambitious development program of the Brazil government aiming to safeguard future energy supply for this fast-growing emerging country.
