New Motor-Driven Metering Pump in Hygienic Design Variant

18.08.2021
In the food and beverage industry, purity and cleanliness standards are very high. Units and systems designed in line with hygiene requirements enable simple cleaning and prevent contamination in the production process. These standards are met by ProMinent’s new motor-driven metering pump Sigma X in the Hygienic Design variant.

The Hygienic Design version of the Sigma diaphragm metering pumps is optimised in terms of dead space, features as few gaps as possible and has smooth, wetted surfaces for flexible and easy use in hygienically sensitive applications. (Image source: ProMinent GmbH)

This pump ensures accurate and hygienic metering of cleaning agents, disinfectants, additives and auxiliary agents, e.g. such as colourings, flavourings and preservatives. The liquid end is CIP-compatible at temperatures of up to 130 °C and a priming pressure of up to max. 2 bar. Volumes of between 25 and 1000 l/h can be metered at back pressure of 10 to 4 bar.

The simple construction and smooth, wetted surfaces of the new liquid end serve as the basis for the virtually gap-free and dead room-optimised Hygienic Design, making easy Cleaning-In-Place (CIP) and rapid disassembly possible. The sealing surfaces are designed in line with the latest guidelines and feature the required minimum radii. The properties of the new ball non-return valves have been optimised in terms of fluid dynamics and ensure optimum turbulence at critical points. All the liquid end’s wetted materials are physiologically safe in accordance with FDA and EN Regulation 1935/2004. What’s more, the surfaces undergo a final electropolishing stage and have a surface roughness of Ra ≤ 0.8 μm. The pump is integrated into the production process using a tri-clamp connector according to DIN 11864-3.

Safe and efficient
The new motor-driven metering pump Sigma X in the Hygienic Design enables reliable CIP without the liquid end having to be disassembled, so it can be cleaned quickly, reliably and efficiently, thereby minimising the risk of bacterial contamination. The option of cleaning at temperatures of up to 130° Celsius also reduces fresh water consumption and the amount of waste water produced as well as demand for cleaning agents. The short cleaning, tooling and idle times ensure good system availability.

The metering chamber is hermetically sealed and has no shaft passage. A PTFE multi-layer diaphragm with diaphragm rupture control in the standard version of the pump offers additional process reliability.

Like all intelligent ProMinent metering pumps, the Sigma X product range in the Hygienic Design can be flexibly networked. The pumps are connected to process control systems via potential-free contacts, a 0/4-20mA standard signal or by networking using the integrated PROFIBUS, CANopen interface. PROFIBUS is a registered Trademark of the Profibus Nutzerorganisation e.V.
