EBARA Signs Prototype Pump Contract for High-Efficiency Heat Dissipation System for Satellites
1. Background and Objectives
This matter is related to the "R&D of High-Efficiency Heat Dissipation System for Digital Signal Processing (hereinafter: this Project)," which is one of the projects under the "Cabinet Office's Strategic Program for Accelerating Space Development and Utilization (Stardust Program)," a strategic R&D program to accelerate Japan's space development and utilization.
In the future, as 5G/6G communications become widespread, satellites will need to be equipped with even higher-performance electronic components; however, an increase in failures due to heat generation is anticipated. Therefore, future satellites require efficient heat dissipation in outer space, and JAXA is conducting research and development on a two-phase flow heat dissipation system with high heat removal capabilities. Under these circumstances, domestic production of the cooling refrigerant pump, one of the main components of this system, has become an urgent task to strengthen international competitiveness, leading to this competitive bidding announcement for the pump prototype.
EBARA believed it could contribute to this matter by leveraging its technology for space-use pumps, cultivated through the development of electric turbo pumps for rocket engines and pumps for thrusters, and thus participated in this competitive bidding, leading to the contract conclusion.
2. Overview
The pump to be developed this time is the heart of the cooling system that regulates the satellite's heat. The pump circulates the coolant, enabling stable operation of the satellite.
Based on this contract, Ebara will begin the design and prototyping of the pump and deliver it to JAXA by the end of March 2026.
- Subject: FY2025 Stardust Program R&D of High-Efficiency Heat Dissipation System for Digital Signal Processing - Prototype of Performance Verification Pump for Two-Phase Flow Heat Dissipation System (Part A)
- Contract Date: October 17, 2025
- Performance Deadline: March 31, 2026
3. Future Development
With this pump prototype as the first step, we will proceed with development, envisioning future installation on spacecraft, including Japan's next-generation communication satellites. Through this, we will not only contribute to solving the challenges set forth by the Stardust Program but also support space infrastructure, such as the advancement of 5G and future 6G communications, and contribute to Japan's space development.
