Gary Walker, Director of Global Engineering Operations for Celeros Flow Technology, commented: “We are so proud to receive this recognition from Scottish Engineering, particularly given the quality of the entries from our peers this year. The award is a testament to the ClydeUnion Pumps team, our customers and partners, who have all contributed to making the brand into a global leader in the manufacture and maintenance of safety-critical industrial pumps. It also recognises our continued investment in developing the skills and technology that will make the Cathcart site in Glasgow a beacon of engineering excellence for many years to come.”

Heritage

ClydeUnion Pumps has a long history in Glasgow and can trace its origins back more than 135 years, via the North Sea oil and gas boom to shipbuilding on the Clyde. It brings together the heritage of Weir Pumps and Union Pumps, as well as other respected pump technologies like Guinard, WH Allen and Mather & Platt. Today, its flow control solutions are increasingly used in renewable energy and nuclear power generation, which present new technical challenges as well as new opportunities for growth.

Future plans

In 2023, owner Celeros Flow Technology announced a significant long-term investment in the site at Cathcart, with a vision to establish a stable, sustainable and future-proof plan to secure the long-term future of ClydeUnion Pumps in Glasgow and on the global stage. Their vision for the site included updating and expanding the manufacturing capabilities so that ClydeUnion Pumps could compete for even bigger projects, with the ultimate aim of expanding to form a Scottish Centre of Excellence.

The Scottish Engineering Company of the Year accolade recognises this level of investment in the Scottish economy and local job creation, as well as the company’s commitment to securing a more sustainable future.

Investment in People

Alongside the improvement to the ClydeUnion Pumps site, Celeros Flow Technology is investing in the existing workforce with the introduction of a new apprenticeship programme. Designed to create the workforce of the future, the programme offers 48 apprenticeships over six years, with 22 recruited across 2021/2022 and a further 26 planned for 2023-2026. The apprenticeship scheme aims to ensure strength and depth across all functions and is run in conjunction with East Kilbride Training Group.

This investment in people was also recognised by Scottish Engineering. One of ClydeUnion Pump’s apprentice engineers, James Duncan, was runner up of the Scottish Engineering Apprentice of the Year 2024.
