With Ozone Ttechnology Against Micropollutants: Bickenbach Sets New Standards in Wastewater Treatment

02.12.2025
With its new fourth treatment stage, the Bickenbach sewage plant is taking a decisive step towards sustainable water and drinking water protection. The modular DULCOZON OZLa ozone system from ProMinent removes micropollutants such as drug residues, pesticides and hormones almost completely and sustainably improves water quality in the Rhine-Main region.

Challenge: New EU directive, new requirements
In a new directive, the EU requires that trace substances be specifically removed from waste water in future using a so-called fourth treatment stage. For many sewage plants, this means further technological development and an investment in the future.
The Bickenbach sewage plant also saw this not only as an obligation, but also as an opportunity to actively shape environmental protection and resource conservation. The existing system, which treats around two million cubic metres of waste water from around 35,000 PE (population equivalents) in the region every year, was comprehensively modernised - and, thanks to the new technology, has developed into one of the most modern and efficient systems in the whole of Hesse.

Solution: Precise technology for a reliable effect
The modular DULCOZON OZLa ozone system from ProMinent takes centre stage - a system that adapts flexibly to changing wastewater volumes and precisely controls the addition of ozone. In combination with activated carbon filtration, trace substances are effectively removed. Supplementary information for cooling water, ozone distribution, residual ozone gas destruction and room air monitoring ensure safe and energy-efficient operation.

The fourth cleaning stage consists of three coordinated components:

  • Pre-filtration: Removes particles and optimally prepares the water for the next stage.
  • Ozonation: Oxidises trace substances and converts them into biodegradable compounds.
  • Activated carbon filter: Binds remaining residues and ensures clear, clean water.

Result: Clean water, sustainable technology
A successful example of sustainable wastewater treatment and responsible drinking water protection

Since commissioning, the system has impressed with its consistent purification performance: micropollutants are almost completely removed, the water quality improves noticeably and the system reacts flexibly to changing requirements.

The project shows how innovative technology, environmental awareness and economic efficiency can work together. Together with the experts from ProMinent, a solution was realised that is designed for long-term reliability and sustainability. The sewage plant thus makes an important contribution to protecting the region's waters and fusing the drinking water supply for future generations.

The advantages at a glance

  • Micropollutants such as drug residues, pesticides and hormones are almost completely removed.
  • Modular technology adapts flexibly to changing wastewater volumes.
  • Precise control ensures efficient, economical operation.
  • Contribution to the protection of water and drinking water resources in the Rhine-Main region

Conclusion
With the new ozone plant from ProMinent, the Bickenbach sewage plant demonstrates how technological innovation and environmental protection can work together to strengthen drinking water protection - today and in the future.
