Following an unexpected technical fault that impacted the steam turbine and generator at the Vung Ang Power Plant, the facility urgently needed to address the sudden resulting outage.

Given the plant’s need to resume operations as quickly as possible, Sulzer’s regional support team of experts devised a solution to restore the integrity of the system without having to replace it, thus avoiding lengthy lead times, supply chain issues and expensive replacement costs. By employing re-engineering and submerged arc welding technologies, traditional weld repair methods and other qualified overhaul processes, Sulzer’s solution restored the system, saving the customer enormous expense and reputational damage.

Sulzer’s President for Services in APAC, Li Jian said: “Understanding what’s important to our customers is at the heart of our service principle. We continually invest in our capabilities and draw on our expertise and experience to ensure we meet our customers' needs.

Mr Nguyen Quy Kien – Manager of Technical Department at Vung Ang 1 TPP, added: “Vung Ang 1 thermal power plant critically supports Vietnam’s energy requirements for industrial and economic growth. For an overhaul of this magnitude, we needed a partner with significant expertise, experience and capabilities to restore the system to our high industry and safety standards while keeping downtime to a minimum. Following a competitive bidding process, we selected Sulzer as our partner for this project because Sulzer meets all criteria with its capacity, experience and suitable contract execution timeline.”
