Machine builders and plant operators today face the challenge of improving productivity, energy efficiency, cybersecurity and flexibility simultaneously. At the same time, they must shorten development times, manage product variants and reduce the effort required for engineering, commissioning and operation. The new generation is designed to address these requirements.

The new generation is built around three core principles: Security by Design, integrated safety functions and digitalization for greater transparency and maintenance management.

Cybersecurity

With its scalable drive platform, Siemens aims to help machine builders standardize automation solutions more easily. According to Siemens, cybersecurity has been an integral part of the development from the outset. All new generation drives will be made EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)-ready and provide integrated cybersecurity capabilities up to Security Level Capability 2 (SL-C 2) as defined in IEC 62443-4-2.

Safety and digitalization

Integrated safety functions up to Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL3) support the protection of people, machines and plants. Integration into the TIA Portal, an integrated web server and a unified engineering and operating concept are intended to simplify selection, engineering, commissioning, diagnostics and service. Siemens cites shorter engineering times, reduced training requirements and faster standardization across different machine platforms as benefits for users. Through the Ethernet-based OPC UA communication standard, drive and operational data can be made available for asset and energy management, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance applications.

The drives at a glance

The Sinamics G200 addresses general-purpose industrial applications, while the Sinamics G210C has been designed for compact machines with high requirements for power density and overload capability. As a general-purpose drive, the Sinamics G210 covers a broad range of moving, positioning and processing applications. The Sinamics G210X offers dedicated functions for pump, fan, compressor and other infrastructure applications. The Sinamics G220 is positioned as the high-end drive. Together, these drives form a scalable portfolio for continuous-motion applications based on a common technology platform.
