KROHNE draws attention to its OPTIFLUX 4400 electromagnetic flowmeter for safety instrumented systems and for applications that require high measuring accuracy. According to the manufacturer, the flowmeter is certified for safety applications up to SIL 2/3 and was developed in accordance with IEC 61508. It is intended to help plant operators meet their functional-safety objectives while keeping process measurement reliable.

A key feature of the OPTIFLUX 4400 is its automated partial proof test function. According to KROHNE, it can extend the interval between full proof tests and so increase plant uptime. It also supports the documentation and execution of partial proof tests in safety instrumented systems.

The diagnostic test, including fault response time, takes two minutes. If the meter operates outside its specified range, it issues an alert. Diagnostics compliant with NAMUR NE 107 detect process and device conditions such as gas bubbles, solids, electrode corrosion or deposits, conductivity changes, empty or partially filled pipes, disturbed flow profiles and external magnetic fields.

The manufacturer states a measuring error of ±0.2% of measured value ±1 mm/s. Integrated conductivity measurement, redundant data storage and a real-time clock for event logging support process monitoring and verification.

A coloured display shows the device status, and a reduced menu structure is intended to make commissioning quicker. For non-SIL applications where it applies, a virtual reference option allows installation without grounding rings.

The OPTIFLUX 4400 is available in SIL 2/3 configurations up to DN600 (24 inches) and in non-SIL configurations up to DN2000 (80 inches). Larger sizes are available on request. A choice of liner and electrode materials lets the flowmeter be configured for different process requirements.

The flowmeter has ATEX and IECEx db eb approvals for use in hazardous areas. It supports pulse, frequency, status, 4–20 mA and HART outputs. Field verification is possible with the KROHNE OPTICHECK Master and OPTICHECK DTM service tools, including partial proof test documentation in accordance with IEC 61508.
