Betsy Arrives at Thames Water

Following successful trials at a number of network pumping stations, Engenica has purchased a fully mobile 100mm pump set from Hidrostal. The diesel driven self-priming unit is intended for emergency applications and over pumping duties in Thames Water north-western region.

The pump set, affectionately known as ‘Betsy’, is based on the successful Hidrostal screw centrifugal pump that is capable of handling unscreened sewage and sludge without blocking. Betsy can reliably remove settled deposits from the wet wells of the pumping stations whilst addressing suction lifts of up to 8.0m. The complete range of Betsy mobile units cover all branch sizes from 100mm to 250mm.

The completely self-contained pump package, which includes a 180 hour fuel tank, is mounted on a high-speed road trailer and is complete with diesel drive, all controls and hoses. Long lengths of suction and delivery pipework, 18m and 60m respectively, make rapid deployment an easy task. Operation is also completely automatic and trouble-free, based as it is on electronic priming and continuous level measurement. Everything is contained within an acoustic housing to permit the unrestricted deployment of Betsy in noise sensitive areas.

Environmental issues have been paramount in the development of the design. Double mechanical seals are fitted as standard, to minimise the leakage of sewage, and full spillage containment ensures that any sewage, fuel or lubricating oil remains within the unit, so eliminating ground contamination.

Level control has proved very beneficial to users as it eliminates the traditional need to run on snore. Therefore reducing pump running hours, fuel consumption and noise.
