Xylem: Handling hospital wastewater with care

18.05.2020
In response to the spread of the coronavirus in Italy, and to ensure continuity of normal health services, the Provincial Health Authority of Palermo required the expansion of the Civic Hospital of Partinico to treat COVID-19 patients in Sicily – the first to do so in the region.

The mandate involved significant adaptation and partial requalification of the facility, including the establishment of two intensive care wards to host 24 intensive care beds and four sub-intensive care beds. The hospital moved quickly to expand its capacity to provide the needed services to those affected in their community.

Wastewater treatment capacity

In order to ensure the care of patients affected by COVID-19 and continue normal health services, the Civic Hospital of Partinico needed to create a new treatment plant to manage the volume of wastewater in compliance with the effluent parameters set by the authorities.

To ensure effective treatment of the wastewater, the Civic Hospital of Partinico looked to Xylem to supply pumps and mixers via the contractor B.O.D srl.

Xylem is honored to have supported the proper treatment of the hospital’s wastewater, helping protect the public and environmental health of the city. And we’re honored to serve healthcare workers on the frontlines of this crisis who are doing so much to protect their community.

About the technology

The wastewater treatment plant was built inside a fiberglass tank and consists of three treatment stages. The first stage lifts the wastewater through two Flygt N 3069 pumps and sends it to the next stage, where the wastewater is treated with chlorine, a disinfectant with high bactericidal capacity. The third stage, in which two Flygt SR4610 compact mixers and two Flygt N 3069 pumps operate, eliminates the residual chlorine through a chemical process and discharges the wastewater into the city’s sewage system. Flygt N 3069 pumps include Adaptive N technology, which prevents clogging and enables a sustainable low use of energy.
