Voith to Deliver all Electro-Mechanical Components to 42 MW Small Hydropower Plant Achwa River


Voith is to equip hydropower plant Achwa River in Uganda, Africa. The order covers design, manufacturing, supply and transportation as well as erection, testing and commissioning of all electro-mechanical parts.

The hydropower plant is located in northern Uganda where river Achwa forms the border between the districts Gulu and Pader. With four vertical Francis turbines and vertical synchronous generators the power plant will have an installed capacity of 42 MW. In addition to the power units also the complete electrical and mechanical balance of plant systems as well as automation will be provided by Voith.

For this specific project Voith is working with M/s Berkeley Energy who is the major shareholder. Voith looks back on a long standing presence on the African continent and also on a long-term relationship with M/s Berkeley Energy with their endeavor to bring clean energy to the world.

Hydropower is the largest, oldest and also most reliable form of renewable energy generation. Worldwide it makes an indispensable contribution to stable power supplies and hence to economic and social development – both in industrial countries and in emerging markets. At the same time, hydropower significantly contributes to climate-protecting energy generation. Voith has been a leading supplier of this technology since the early beginning, and continuously develops it further.
