Flood Management Highlights Concepts for Supplying Water in a State of Emergency at Wasser Berlin International 2016

29.09.2016

Being able to supply water in the event of a terror attack or an environmental disaster is an issue of life-saving importance. At Wasser Berlin International 2017 the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) will provide detailed information on how the federal government has prepared for emergencies of this kind.

In accordance with the Federal Law Safeguarding Water Supplies more than 5,200 wells have been set up in major cities and conurbations to ensure emergency supplies of drinking water. This emergency supply concept will be explained on the basis of plans made for the city of Cologne. All the equipment required for a well that can independently supply drinking water even without electricity will be displayed. Items include a pump, power generator and communal taps as well as the corresponding electrical and water mains connections.

Furthermore, an advanced risk analysis method that functions as an important instrument for all municipal water authorities will be presented, using which they can assess their vulnerability in potentially high-risk situations. Other important aspects are the creation of contingency plans and preparations for emergency water supplies, against the backdrop of a long-term loss of electrical power, for example. The Technical Relief Organisation (THW) will also be on the stand of BBK in Hall 4.2 to provide information on drinking water supplies in emergencies.

On Wednesday, 29 March 2017, the Flood Management Symposium will take place on the topic of floods caused by extreme weather events and heavy rainfall. The symposium is being organised together with the Royal Dutch Embassy and will be held in the Experts Forum in Hall 4.2. Admission is included in a ticket to the fair.
