The current EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive is more than 30 years old, and it has made dramatic improvements to the water quality in European rivers, lakes and seas. However, several pollution challenges remain and are not covered by the current legislation.

The updated consent has led the public utility to upgrade Edgehead wastewater treatment works (WwTW) in Midlothian, east of Edinburgh.
