Haskel Whitepaper Examines High-Pressure Reliability in Oil & Gas

16.10.2026
Rising operating pressures, harsh environments and the high cost of equipment failure are placing greater reliability demands on hydraulic and pneumatic systems in Oil & Gas and industrial operations. Haskel’s new whitepaper, High-Pressure Reliability in Upstream Oil & Gas Operations, looks at these challenges in upstream Oil & Gas. It also outlines reliability principles and fluid power technologies that apply to similarly demanding industrial applications.

Offshore developments are moving into deeper waters and more extreme operating environments, and industrial systems increasingly operate above 10,000 psi. As a result, operators face growing pressure to minimise downtime, reduce risk and keep critical systems available.

“Across the industries we serve, reliability has become the new benchmark,” said Robbie Harbison, Global Product Management Lead at Haskel. “Operators are no longer focused solely on achieving higher pressures. They require systems that can maintain performance over long operating lifecycles, withstand harsh environments and support safety-critical operations with [...] confidence.”

According to the whitepaper, the financial and operational consequences of failure keep rising. Deepwater and ultra-deepwater projects are growing in scale and complexity, and the whitepaper puts the cost of maintenance interventions at hundreds of thousands to several million US dollars per day. Requirements for fluid power systems are rising accordingly: fail-safe operation, pressure stability, corrosion resistance and long service life. High-pressure fluid power plays a central role in many applications. Examples include emergency shutdown valves, wellhead control systems and blowout preventers, as well as hydrostatic testing, bolt tensioning and accumulator charging.

Haskel supplies high-pressure pumps, compressors, valves and engineered systems for pressure generation, storage and control. According to the company, its solutions are designed for hazardous and remote environments and can operate independently of an electrical power supply. This is relevant where electrical power may be unavailable or unsuitable.

The whitepaper identifies several engineering priorities for the future of fluid power:

  • Long-term reliability in harsh operating environments
  • Redundant and fail-safe system architectures
  • Advanced sealing technologies and corrosion-resistant materials
  • Digital monitoring and predictive maintenance
  • Support for hydrogen and alternative energy applications
  • Higher pressure ratings for next-generation infrastructure
