Baker SPD Introduces the Mud Hog™ Centrifugal Pump

Baker SPD has entered the centrifugal pump market with the introduction of the Mud Hog™ pump. The Mud Hog is designed for fluid transfer and enhanced fluid movement in the mud systems of all types of drilling rigs.

“Our customers have asked for an alternative when it comes to centrifugal pumps, and Baker SPD has met that request with the Mud Hog,” said Baker SPD international sales manager Marty Tosh. “The Mud Hog delivers optimum performance, reliability, and

cost savings.”

The pump’s high quality bearing configuration contributes to greater life expectancy through improved stability and lower vibration. The wear pad and heavy duty mechanical seals help to improve the life expectancy of the casing and impeller. The Mud Hog’s components are completely interchangeable with other leading pumps currently on the market.

The Mud Hog is available since July with the 2-1/2 in. shaft and casing sizes 3x2x13-in. through 8x6x14-in. The 1-1/8 in. and 1-7/8 in. shaft design will soon follow.

Baker SPD provides production and drilling products and services for the energy markets. Technical information about the Mud Hog is available in the new brochure, Centrifugal Pump Parts. To learn more about the Mud Hog and other Baker SPD products or to view the brochure, visit

Multi screw pump moves highly viscous heavy oil at low NPSHa

22.02.2024 -

At a tank farm in a Brazilian sea port, two centrifugal pumps were used for transferring heavy oil from storage tanks to road tankers or vessels until February 2020. This required the high viscosity of the medium to be reduced by means of diesel injection, costing the owner at least 2,000 US dollars each day. In addition, the centrifugal pumps regularly broke down due to cavitation damage. The owners decided to initially replace one of the two centrifugal pumps with a NOTOS multi screw pump from NETZSCH. Due to its very good suction capabilities, the selected four-screw 4NS is also suitable for highly viscous media with up to 200,000 cSt, achieving a flow rate of up to 3000 m³/h.
