Xylem Launches New Energy Efficient Closed-vessel UV System

16.05.2013

Xylem Inc. has launched a new closed-vessel, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection solution optimized for large-scale wastewater treatment plants, industrial and water reuse applications.

Xylem’s Wedeco LBX 850e system is a new highly energy-efficient addition to the company’s LBX Series and has been fully validated according to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s UV Disinfection Guidance Manual (USEPA’s UVDGM 2006) and the National Water Research Institute (NWRI) guidelines by independent, industry-leading Carollo Engineers.

While validation is the norm for drinking water treatment systems, it is relatively rare for wastewater solutions. Xylem’s Wedeco brand is a pioneer in this area, having launched the first UVDGM compliant vessels for wastewater applications in 2010. In addition, the Wedeco LBX Series was the first closed-vessel, low pressure, high output amalgam UV system in the world to obtain the stringent California Title 22 acceptance. With its Wedeco LBX series Xylem is providing customers with a solution that will support them to meet future regulatory requirements.

Dr. Bertrand Dussert, Global UV Business Manager at Xylem said, “As climate change, water scarcity and growing environmental awareness drive stricter effluent standards and water reuse initiatives, validated UV systems are fast becoming an essential component of wastewater treatment plants. Whenever a pressurized system is beneficial for the customer, the LBX Series is the ideal solution.”

“To further extend its capacity range, Xylem will launch the LBX 1500e this autumn 2013. Along with the LBX 850e this new system will strengthen our portfolio in the higher flow rate ranges and meet an increasing demand for large-scale water reuse projects,” concluded Dr. Dussert.

UV treatment is an environmentally sustainable solution and a very effective alternative to chemical-based disinfection such as chlorine treatment. As a chemical-free treatment, UV disinfection does not carry the risk of forming harmful by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs).

Wedeco’s low-pressure, high-output amalgam UV systems offer superior performance due to the highly efficient Ecoray lamp technology. Designed by the Xylem Wedeco team, Ecoray lamps consume approximately one-third of the amount of energy that medium pressure lamp systems need to operate. Compared to other low-pressure, high-output amalgam UV lamps, they provide the benefit of longer lamp life, higher sustainability, superior dimming capabilities and lower mercury content. Wedeco’s extensive experience with ‘sensor-based dose pacing’ offers additional energy savings.

The OptiDose Control ensures the required dosage is applied while conserving power and lamp life. Additionally the automatic wiping system maintains maximum sleeve transmittance resulting in peak efficiency. By keeping the sleeves continuously clean, the system uses less energy and lowers operational costs and maintenance effort.

Xylem’s Wedeco LBX series successfully treats a wide range of liquids in many different industries and has been installed in more than 1,000 traditional and specialty treatment plants worldwide. It is a very adaptable and flexible system that can be tailored for wastewater treatment plants and industrial applications, such as disinfection of sugar syrup within the food and beverage industry. Moreover, it is an attractive solution for water treatment plants using surface water as source.
