Weir Services Secure Two Water Contracts in Australia

20.09.2004

Weir Services Australia has been awarded two major contracts for water treatment plants at BHP Billiton's Ravensthorpe Nickel Project.

The first contract is for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of a water treatment plant consisting of two multiple effect distillation (MED/TCD) seawater desalination units and three mixed bed demineralisation streams. The plant is located at Ravensthorpe in the central south coastal region of Western Australia, approximately 570km south east of Perth.

Seawater will be pumped 42 km from Mason Point on the coast to Ravensthorpe where it will be treated for use to drinking water standards.

The desalination plant is to be delivered in association with Weir Techna and is scheduled for completion early in 2006.

Weir Services Australia has also secured a contract for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of two nutrient removal wastewater treatment plants at the site. Both plants have an innovatively designed downturn of 80% in capacity to allow for the large fluctuations in population that occur during construction and operation.

Together the contracts are worth in excess of A$16m.

Andrew Woolaston, managing director of Weir Services Australia, commented, “These contracts demonstrate our ability to supply innovative engineering solutions, manage projects on tight timescales and supply an effective water production and wastewater treatment strategy that meets the business needs of our customer.”
