Weir Awarded with Buzzard Oilfield Development Contract
Weir Westgarth, part of the Techna Division of the Weir Group, has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract on the Buzzard Oilfield Development Project.
The award by EnCana (UK) Ltd. and Partners, is for the supply of a 251,700-BPD sulphate removal process plant.
The plant is designed to remove sulphates and other divalent ions from injection water to enhance oil recovery. The removal of these ions reduces the tendency of barium sulphate and strontium sulphate scale to form in the reservoir.
The Westgarth process design incorporates a unique membrane pre-filtration system (patent pending) that will deliver significant advantages in space, weight, feed water quality and operating costs over the “industry standard” options.
Other companies within the Weir Group will benefit from the contract through the supply of associated equipment including pumps, valves and specialist alloys and metals.
The Buzzard field located 100 kilometres to the north-east of Aberdeen, is the largest oilfield discovery in the North Sea in the past decade with estimated recoverable reserves of over 400 million barrels of oil. First oil is due late 2006.
Weir Westgarth have been involved in the design and supply of sulphate removal plant since the first commercial installation of the technology in the early 1990's.
This order for the Buzzard development with its high profile importance in the North Sea oil sector, further establishes Weir Westgarth in its market leading position.
