The station has recently installed a Naiad copperas saturator with Verder Dura pumps to accommodate copperas crystal and generate dilute ferrous sulphate solution for dosing.

Phil Kerrison, MD of Naiad and the designer of the process explains the issues involved in this project: “Dosing the intake water at coal fired power stations can protect the condenser tubes against corrosion. The addition of ferrous iron to seawater causes an effective protective film to establish as Fe2+ is oxidised to colloidal iron, which adheres to the inside walls of the tubes.”

Mike Heap, Sales Director at Verder who installed the unit adds “With the Naiad copperas saturator now in place the process is automatic and requires little manual intervention. It has performed well since it was installed some months ago and has enabled one-tonne loads of copperas crystal to be safely employed. At Kilroot, the 1-tonne bags are lifted into position above the saturator with a crane system and copperas crystal is progressively fed into the reception tank by releasing a draw cord at the base of the bag.

“In Naiad’s patented process, the crystal is continuously dissolved in water and dosed to the works’ inlet by dedicated Verder Dura pumps, with similar pumps being used to generate the dilute solution. The process is regulated by a digital dose controller which is set up and operated by way of a touch screen HMI. The site operator simply enters the weight of chemical delivered to the unit and starts the dosing process by pressing the ‘Start’ button on the dosing panel.”

In summary Mike comments: “Customers come to Verder because we understand the complexities of the industries and companies we work with, so we can tailor the best solution to their business. We have been working with Naiad for some time now, because of the synergy in our expertise and offering, and we look forward to continuing this relationship to ensure customers continue to benefit from low maintenance, cost effective pumping solutions.”
