United Solar Signs 7-Year Contract with BOC Edwards

09.07.2002

BOC Edwards, a leading provider of vacuum pumps, exhaust management systems and specialty gases for the microelectronics industry, has announced a seven-year contract with United Solar Systems Corporation (USSC) to provide bulk atmospheric gas systems, gas cabinets, process gases and on-site service support for USSC’s solar cell manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

A wide range of bulk and process gases including Argon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Silane, are commonly used in the solar panel industry. USSC makes a unique solar panel for use with commercial and residential roofing. USSC’s solar panels have three amorphous semiconductor solar sub-cells with various spectral response characteristics, that allows the cell to convert the visible and near-infrared wavelengths of sunlight with optimal efficiency. “BOC Edwards’ integrated approach and full range of capabilities were a deciding factor in awarding this business,” said Kevin Hoffman, Director of Production, USSC. “Their history as a reliable supplier of industrial and specialty gases, combined with process knowledge and design services, are key factors in helping us to maintain delivery and quality commitments to our customers.” United Solar Systems Corporation is a joint venture between Energy Conversion Devices (ECD) and Bekaert. USSC is a leader in thin-film amorphous photovoltaics, producing solar panels in a range of sizes for commercial and residential use.
