PROFIBUS & AS-i Telling it Like it Is

16.09.2004

Visitors to Drives and Controls Exhibition can learn about practical applications of the key, emerging communications and automation technologies, thanks to a series of presentations by PROFIBUS International and AS-i organisations.

These free-of-charge seminars include key industry speakers, as well as independent experts from the Health & Safety Executive (H&SE).

The PROFIBUS presentations include real-life applications, with easily understandable demonstrations of how the technologies can help manufacturers operate and integrate their automation installations more efficiently. One of the planned topics will be PROFIdrive, the protocol designed to make it easier to integrate drive and motion systems into automation installations.

AS-i presentations will take the form of half-day seminars. The planned programme will include case studies of AS-i in action in the food and other process industries, and applying AS-i Safety at Work. A speaker from the H&SE looks at the regulatory background to networked safety systems, and there is a peek into the future, with a report on the latest extensions to AS-i.

On the exhibition floor, Rolls-Royce Marine Electrical Systems will be demonstrating how it has used PROFIBUS in the refurbishment of training simulators for the Royal Navy. There will also be a working demonstration of AS-i technologies applied to a conveyor system. “The presentations offer visitors the opportunity to bring themselves up-to-date on technologies that are going to shape the future of the automation market, " says show organiser, Ken Purchase.
