HAZLETON, Pa., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- On behalf of Pennsylvania Gov. MarkSchweiker, Labor and Industry Deputy Secretary Robert

Moore today presented the Governor's Award for Safety Excellence

to Hazleton Pumps Inc. and its 180 employees.

The Governor's Award for Safety Excellence is a key element of the

PENNSAFE -- Pennsylvania Safety First -- workplace-safety program. This

effort recognizes successful workplace-safety programs through the Governor's

award.

The joint worker-management safety committee at Hazleton Pumps Inc. meets

on a monthly basis, and concentrates on injury investigations, safety training

and audits of workspaces.

Workers' compensation savings have been used to enhance safety throughout

the plant. Improvements include the installation of a state-of-the-art sand

mixer that greatly reduces quartz silica exposure for workers, a closed-loop

system for the tocco furnaces, and a compaction table that reduces the

possibility of hand and arm injuries.

The company's Voluntary Protection Program team holds quarterly cookouts

for all employees. Smoke detectors and batteries are provided to all

employees, and tokens of appreciation are given to workers during National

Safety Month in June.

Hazleton Pumps was founded in 1916 and has grown to become a leader in

centrifugal pump design and manufacture. Pumps manufactured by Hazleton Pumps

are now installed in all major industries in the United States and in 35 other

countries.
