The series of high-efficiency pumps for the high performance range in heating, cold water and cooling applications is a totally new development; for the first time, glanded pumps are driven by EC motors with extremely low electricity consumption.

At the same time, Wilo is now rounding off the energy-saving "Wilo-Stratos" family. Based on a motor efficiency of 94 % at 4.5 kW rated motor power, and according to the manufacturer s figures, the pumps teamed up with new hydraulics achieve a particularly high level of overall efficiency. The motor s energy efficiency is based on the new high-efficiency HED drive concept (HED – High Efficiency Drive) from Wilo and even outclasses the limits of the upcoming efficiency class IE4 (acc. to IEC TS 60034-31 Ed.1) that is set to be the best. In addition, all the future specifications of the new EU Regulation that is set to come into force on 16 June 2011 under the auspices of the European Ecodesign Directive on the energy efficiency of electric motors are far outclassed.

Together with the high-efficiency "Wilo-Stratos" glandless for the medium performance range and the "Wilo-Stratos PICO" circulator with particularly low current consumption for relatively small heating and climate-control circuits, planners and investors can cover all the requirements in building services using Wilo high-efficiency pumps with particularly low current consumption. This is why the performance ranges of the three "Wilo-Stratos" series blend seamlessly into one another.

The hydraulics and the drive have been systematically adapted to one another, which also represents a basis for the very high overall efficiency levels of the new series. Compared to old, uncontrolled pumps available on the market, the upshot is that the new ones can achieve an energy saving of up to 70 % based on the manufacturer s figures. The saving potential compared to conventional speed-controlled pumps is up to 40 % (calculated according to the "Blauer Engel" load profile). This results in a rapid payback of the investment costs compared to a standard pump within a maximum of two years. In addition, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 12.5 tonnes per pump per annum (based on the German energy generation mix) compared to corresponding uncontrolled pumps. This amount of CO2 corresponds to the emissions from a medium-category car driving about 90,000 km – more than twice round the Earth.

The new drive with an integrated frequency converter combined with ECM technology also offers a control range that is three times wider than conventional electronically controlled pumps. This results in significantly improved adaptability to changes in the power requirement of hydraulic systems and an additional energy saving potential. The operating logic is the same as in previously available models from the manufacturer due to the proven "red-button technology" and a display. Pluggable IF-Modules that are optionally available make it possible to achieve various interfaces for bus communication. At the same time, it represents an integrated solution with optimised use of space, but without external gateways. BACnet, Modbus, CAN, LON and PLR mean that all current market standards are supported for integration into the building automation.

Applications for the new "Wilo-Stratos GIGA" series are heating, cold water and cooling systems. The permitted temperature range for the fluid is -20°C bis +140°C, meaning that the high-efficiency pumps have a very broad range of applications. For climate-control applications, they are effectively protected against corrosion by a cataphoretic coating and condensation drainage that is fitted as standard. The high-efficiency pump is based on a new Wilo glandless design which permits a compact and space-saving construction together with a low overall weight. Not least, this significantly facilitates handling during installation and maintenance.

The "Wilo-Stratos GIGA" had already won the "iF product design award 2011" before its first official trade show presentation. This prestigious design prize is given in recognition not only of design quality but also the level of innovation, environmental compatibility, functions and ergonomics.

The first high-efficiency pumps in the "Wilo-Stratos GIGA" series with nominal diameter DN40 and rated motor power values of up to 4.5 kW will be available in September 2011.
