New Pressure Boosting Units for Fire-Fighting Systems

In May 2009 KSB Aktiengesellschaft, Frankenthal, expanded its product range by two new, fully automatic package pressure boosting units for fire-fighting systems. Both the new Hya-Solo D FL single-pump unit and the Hya-Duo D FL dual-pump unit meet the criteria of the new DIN 14462 for fire-fighting water systems, valid since April 2009.

These pressure boosting units have been designed for use in residential buildings as well as on commercial and industrial premises. Their maximum flow rate is 110 cubic metres per hour, to a head of up to 160 metres.

The Hya-Duo D FL dual-pump unit features a stand-by pump and separate electric circuits, thus meeting redundancy requirements. The units are started up and switched off as a function of pressure and can be controlled via one or several remote ON-OFF limit switches at a wall hydrant. An optional flow-rate based control function makes it particularly easy to install the ready-to-plug-in package unit.

As a standard, a timer in the control cabinet starts the daily operation check run and the weekly flushing for pipe hygiene. A temperature sensor monitors the inside of the pump. If the set limit is exceeded, a solenoid valve opens and lets the water flow back to the reservoir of non-pressurised external fluid or to the outlet. This means the temperature inside the pump cannot rise above the limit and damage the pump.

The discharge and suction side of the pump are each equipped with a lockable valve which prevents any unauthorised person from closing the valves and thus stopping the unit. The mains switch is also protected against unauthorised actuation. The pressure switches and limit switches are monitored for broken wires and short circuit to make sure the pressure is maintained and the unit is always ready for fire-fighting.

The system has a range of electronic features for added reliability. For example the phase and control voltage monitoring. Or the motor protection device which signals an alert in the event of fire without switching the pump off automatically. Volt-free contacts offer additional flexibility for remote monitoring of the system and possibly also hook-up to external systems such as a drinking water stop or a drainage system.

Hya-Duo D FL’s optional, retrofittable acoustic cladding lowers the sound pressure level and offers protection from contamination.

Sulzer Pump Retrofit Secures Flare Knockout Pump Reliability

21.11.2023 -

To ensure the profitability of offshore oil and gas extraction, operators require equipment to perform reliably throughout long periods between maintenance intervals. When an international oil company (IOC) was experiencing short mean time between failures (MTBF) for its liquified petroleum flare knockout vessel pumps on an offshore platform in Malaysia, the business approached Sulzer for a pump retrofit to safeguard uptime.
