Efficient Metering Systems for the Paper Industry

09.06.2010

ProMinent, the manufacturer of low-pressure diaphragm metering pumps makes use of innovative electronics to deliver significantly more energy efficiency in the Beta metering pumps and rounds off its range of peristaltic pumps with product series for low, medium and high flow rates.

ProMinent will present their solutions for the pulp and paper industry during the 105th Zellcheming annual meeting together with some 300 manufacturers from 20 countries.

Because water and aqueous solutions are key elements of the paper manufacturing process, water treatment offers significant potential for cost savings.

The addition of retention agents, for example, makes paper production more economical. These can be prepared as a 0.05% - 0.5% solution with polymer preparation and metering systems from the Ultromat series. Optimally adapted to the process, the solution enables very high retention of fine materials. The specific use of retention agents keeps the consumption of pigments and filler minerals to a minimum. In addition, the process water is consistently used and reused to significantly reduce water consumption. Polluted water can be cleaned by filtration and flotation in a pre-treatment stage.

The necessary water treatment requires not only extensive measuring, control and monitoring but also numerous metering tasks, which are efficiently performed by application-optimised components and systems from ProMinent.

For example, the metering systems Dulcodos DSWa meter biocides and inhibitors into cold water and precisely regulate the pH of lyes and acids by adding exactly the right quantity of the appropriate chemicals. For waste water treatment, a coagulant such as iron(III) chloride can be metered. At Zellcheming Expo, by way of example ProMinent will be presenting two metering systems featuring either motor-driven metering pumps from the Sigma range or solenoid metering pumps from the beta or gamma / L ranges, depending on application, as well as a calibration unit, for accurate metering.

A control circuit specially designed for the application in hand ensures that all chemicals enter the processes at the right time and in the right quantity. Selective, exact measurements from the Dulcotest sensors, combined with Dulcometer measuring and control equipment, provide reliable monitoring and control.

Energy-efficient

The low-wear Beta is equipped with all adjustment and activation functions for modern water treatment and chemical metering and features pulse step-up and step-down. This enables it to adapt more precisely to external signal generators. The result is the simpler and more precise adjustment of chemical consumption to the actual need. Energy consumption is up to 50% lower than in the predecessor model. The Beta can be easily adjusted during operation.

Hose pumps

ProMinent is adding new hose pumps to its range for low, medium and high flow rates. With flow rates from 17 - 25 000 l/h and a wide range of hose materials, these pumps are suitable for both laboratory and industrial applications. For low pressures of up to 8 bar the pumps are fitted with roller technology, while for higher pressures of up to 16 bar they have shoes with lubrication. The key benefits of these hose pumps include low-impact material transport, dry priming and the transport of viscous and abrasive materials. The material only comes into contact with the hose and may be liquid or gaseous in consistency. Because of the low-impact nature of the design, even shear-sensitive products can be transported without a problem.

Accurate metering

Accurate metering is performed by metering pumps such as the diaphragm metering pump delta with regulated optoDrive solenoid drive. The integrated optoDrive allows the pump to attain a metering accuracy that conventional pumps could only achieve with very complex and expensive control circuits, even at low quantities of around 6 ml/h.

optoDrive also allows the metering characteristics to be adjusted to the application in hand. The drive automatically compensates for fluctuations in the back pressure in the metering line to ensure maximum metering accuracy.

At Zellcheming Expo ProMinent will present its system to visitor, where they can see the regulated solenoid drive up close and even discover its inner workings. A camera in the working model and a monitor will show the movement of the diaphragm and demonstrate the innovative concept.

The 105th Zellcheming annual meeting will take place from 29 June – 1 July 2010 in Wiesbaden, Germany.
