Flygt’s Pump Flotation Modules Triumph in Nature Reserve

16.09.2005

North Yorkshire County Council recently called on the expertise of ITT Flygt to maintain water levels at Scorton, a lake located adjacent to Scorton Quarry in North Yorkshire.

Operations at the quarry, owned by Tarmac, are scheduled to finish in 12 years time, and to coincide with its closure the lake is set to be transformed into a nature reserve. Mike Robson, Contract Supervisor for North Yorkshire County Council said, “We were looking for a pump system to prevent the area surrounding the lake from flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

“The lake was previously balanced by two pumps, which were unable to cope with particularly high water levels. During these periods we would have to hire diesel pumps to support the electric system. “Following the installation of two Pump Flotation Modules from ITT Flygt we have been very pleased with the results, and overall the system is more efficient and cost effective. “In actual fact the cost of installing these pumps was less than hiring and fuelling the diesel pumps for one week.”

The Flygt Pump Flotation Module (PFM) has been developed to provide a light weight and cost effective alternative to the traditional steel pontoon in dewatering applications. It can be supplied to suit Flygt’s range of 2000 series dewatering pumps, 3000 series wastewater pumps and 5000 series slurry pumps, and is suitable for quarries, construction site dewatering, aeration ponds, sludge lagoons and in other sewage treatment plant applications.

The product is pre-fabricated from light weight, foam-filled glass reinforced polymer skin to prevent sinking and is available in four different sizes. The pump and integral module are simply installed by the use of a central stainless steel lifting attachment which once in the water is easily towed by a boat, if required, and secured into position by anchor or guy ropes. The float module remains on the water surface for easy recovery and identification.

ITT Flygt is the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of submersible pumps, mixers and aeration systems. Its products are used in water and wastewater plants, for irrigation, construction and mining projects and in the process industry. ITT Flygt exclusively distributes Allweiler Pumps Ltd products throughout the UK and Ireland. Both companies can now offer a range of complementary pump products to customers within the industrial market. Through its Monitoring and Control division, ITT Flygt solely distributes telemetry and monitoring and control systems from Dynamic Logic. When used in conjunction with Flygt products, its systems offer customers reduced operational costs and benefits.

Multi-Purpose Actuator Enables Ball Valve to Open and Close Automatically

02.05.2024 -

A major southern grow operation needed a valve to open and close automatically on a series of remote fertigation pipelines. The lines were in a location where compressed air and electricity were both unavailable and impractical. It was essential to have the valve close whenever the water supply dropped below operational pressure, to prevent the percentage of nutrients from exceeding safe levels and harming the crop.

Clean Alternative Fuel Liquid Ammonia Requires Fail-Safe and Hermetically Tight Pumps in the Shipping Industry

02.05.2024 -

Ammonia is currently at focus as clean alternative to heavy fuel oil that has predominantly been used. The technology employed in order to use liquid ammonia as a fuel must be hermetically tight and guarantee maximum operational safety as the gas is toxic and harmful to the environment. LEWA’s high-pressure diaphragm pumps meet these requirements. Their standard safety mechanisms make them suitable for hazardous, toxic and environmentally harmful fluids such as NH3, even under extreme operating conditions.
