In-Line Dilution System Cuts Costs

25.04.2005

A substantial reduction in transportation costs for a leading healthcare manufacturer are the key benefits of a recently installed in-line dilution system from Process Installations Ltd, an associate company of Pump Engineering Ltd.

The healthcare manufacturer was taking several deliveries per week of 28% SLES (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate) for production of toiletries and shampoos, requiring considerable storage facilities. By taking deliveries of concentrated 70% SLES and diluting on-site, the company has reduced storage space considerably, cut raw material costs and is no longer paying for the transportation of large volumes of water!

The PI in-line dilution system pumps concentrated 70% SLES from a bulk tank into a flow of deionised water taken directly from a ring main, introducing the two as a continuous stream into a high shear mixer, which has been sized to produce a uniform, fully homogenous mix in a single pass, so that the resultant solution can be dispersed directly into batch mixing vessels at a rate of up to 12 tonnes per hour, avoiding the need for intermediate storage.

The system is controlled by a flow computer which monitors and adjusts the ratio via mass flow meters to ensure that it does not exceed the critical 28% solution above which it forms a highly viscous gel.

The dilution system can be supplied as a self-contained unit with its own control panel, taking up approximately a single pallet space, so it can be positioned conveniently under a platform in a manufacturing area. It can be CIP cleaned and clamp connections also ensure the unit can be stripped quickly and easily if required.

The same system can be adapted for other applications in the healthcare or food industries, for example, the production of hair gels, dilution of tomato paste or fruit juice concentrates.

Richmond Utility Uses Real-Time Analytics for Plan to Reduce Combined Sewer Overflows

03.05.2024 -

The city of Richmond, Virginia needed a plan to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into the James River, but how could its utility operators know which new infrastructure projects would have the biggest impact? The solution was a real-time visualization and decision support system from Xylem that identified critical infrastructure projects, helping the city develop a plan that could reduce CS0s by 180 million gallons and save costs.

Multi-Purpose Actuator Enables Ball Valve to Open and Close Automatically

02.05.2024 -

A major southern grow operation needed a valve to open and close automatically on a series of remote fertigation pipelines. The lines were in a location where compressed air and electricity were both unavailable and impractical. It was essential to have the valve close whenever the water supply dropped below operational pressure, to prevent the percentage of nutrients from exceeding safe levels and harming the crop.

Clean Alternative Fuel Liquid Ammonia Requires Fail-Safe and Hermetically Tight Pumps in the Shipping Industry

02.05.2024 -

Ammonia is currently at focus as clean alternative to heavy fuel oil that has predominantly been used. The technology employed in order to use liquid ammonia as a fuel must be hermetically tight and guarantee maximum operational safety as the gas is toxic and harmful to the environment. LEWA’s high-pressure diaphragm pumps meet these requirements. Their standard safety mechanisms make them suitable for hazardous, toxic and environmentally harmful fluids such as NH3, even under extreme operating conditions.
