Equipment to Award-Winning Wastewater Treatment Plant

03.11.2004

ABS has delivered agitators, pumps and submersible mixers to the new Industriewater Lichtenvoorde C.V purification plant, in The Netherlands. The equipment will be used for digesting processes and dewatering.

The purification plant is situated in the outskirts of the city of Lichtenvoorde, The Netherlands, and treats wastewater from the largest tannery in the country, Koninklijke Hulshof's Verenigde Fabrieken BV. The tannery processes 200.000 skins annually, and wants to increase this number with 50%, which also causes increasing wastewater outlet.

Before the Industriewater Lichtenvoorde C.V purification plant was built, the purified water from the tannery was discharged in the area of the Baakse Beek, which has a sensitive ecological environment. Therefore a decrease in the concentrations of chloride and sulphates was necessary, which called for a new and innovative treatment plant. Now, the wastewater is transported 2,2 km to, and treated in, the new more environmental friendly treatment plant, which will be equipped by ABS’ products.

“ABS was chosen mainly thanks to their extensive application know-how in the area of sludge agitation, especially when it comes to digesters. The SCABA agitators that ABS has supplied are the most suitable for us since they are very energy efficient. ABS’ broad product range is another reason why we chose them as supplier for this project” says project leader Richard Haarhuis, at Waterstromen BV.

The building of Industriewater Lichtenvoorde C.V purification plant, which is owned by Waterstromen BV; a subsidiary of the District Water Board Waterschap Rijn en IJssel, is said to be the most innovative worldwide, due to the many combinations of purification technologies used for this type of waste water. The contractor Paques BV has received an environmental award called the DOW Energy Prize 2003 for this project.
