Winning Performance from Flygt Products at the 2004 Olympic Games

Flygt is proud to have supplied pumps and mixers to Athens for use during the Olympic Games and for years to come. These include the pumps that produce the whitewater flow at the kayaking course, to dewatering pumps on the underground and wastewater pumps and mixers at Europe’s largest treatment plant outside of the city of Athens.

With tens of thousands of athletes and journalists, and hundreds of thousands of supporters flocking to Athens for the Olympic Games, you would expect to find a lot of Flygt pumps and mixers in operation. However, they are not only in operation where you would expect to find them. Naturally, at Europe’s largest wastewater treatment plant, which handles most of the Greek capital’s sewage, Flygt products can be found in almost all phases of treatment.

The plant, located on the 57 hectare large island of Psyttalia, to the south of Athens, has gone through major renovation work. It can now handle up to one million cubic metres of wastewater a day, and well over 100 Flygt pumps and mixers are in use at the plant.

Before 1994, when the first phase of the plant was put into operation, most of the city’s wastewater was pumped straight out into the Mediterranean without being cleaned. Today it is cleaned and then released into the sea two miles off shore at a depth of 64 metres.

But it is not only there that Flygt products are in operation. As visitors travel to the different venues on the underground trains, Flygt pumps will be at work, removing the groundwater that naturally seeps through the rocks above. Many of these pumps have been dewatering the tunnels throughout the construction of the underground system.

Once visitors arrive at the different stadiums, Flygt pumps will be pumping wastewater from toilets and kitchens to the Psyttalia treatment plant, and at one particular venue Flygt pumps will be ensuring that the competition itself runs smoothly.

Five 530 kw pumps with a rate of up to 18 cubic metres a second will be working at a full capacity to generate the flow of salt water around the most modern kayak course in the world. The artificially constructed course measures 420 metres in length, with an extra 250 metre long training section. Without these pumps the course would act like a leisurely flowing river, with them it can simulate one of the world’s toughest whitewater rivers, testing competitors athletes to the full. Just what the Games need to bring the best out of the athletes.
