HHI Develops Auto Vacuum Stripping Systems for Oil Cargo Pumps in Crude Oil Tankers

21.05.2001

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) - one of the better known shipbuilders, engine makers, and industrial pump manufacturers in the world - has newly developed an automatic vacuum stripping system protecting against the danger of an oil cargo pump internal explosion and saves on unloading time.

Recently, HHI succeeded in developing the Auto Vacuum Stripping System and put it through trial runs that were witnessed by ship classification societies such as ABS, LR, DNV, GL, KR and the shipowner on Dec. 14, 2000.

In the domestic shipbuilding market, the oil cargo unloading system-- comprised of cargo pumps, steam turbines, and a vacuum stripping system-- is used in crude oil tankers while in overseas markets, the unloading system is virtually monopolized.

HHI has spent years improving on oil cargo pump capacity and has delivered pumps to HALLA shipyards as well as its own yards. HHI´s own Electro Electric Systems Division under license from MHI manufactures steam turbines. HHI supplies complete oil cargo unloading systems to shipyards, including the vacuum stripping system. HHI is able to be extremely competitive with other companies in terms of price, and also has an effective import substitute as well.

The vacuum stripping system does not operate at the beginning of the oil cargo unloading process. As the liquid level in the oil cargo tank falls, the inflammable gas or vapor generated in the oil cargo itself accumulates at the top of a separator through the suctioning mouth of the oil cargo tank. In order to prevent this gas or vapor from entering into the oil cargo pump, the vacuum pump is used to extract the accumulated gas and vapor from the separator to a slop tank. The separator improves the suction environment for the oil cargo pump.

The newly developed automatic vacuum stripping system protects against the danger of an oil cargo pump internal explosion and saves on unloading time. The system can be upgraded further so that the whole system is monitored in the cargo control room. This is accomplished through adding automatic electronic functions such as a P/L converter, an I/P converter, a PLC, and such to a simple pneumatic system.

Chlorine Gas Systems: New Electric Safety Valve Makes the System Safer

13.12.2024 -

Chlorine gas plays a key role in the disinfection of drinking and industrial water. However, handling the chemical can pose considerable health risks – from irritation of the eyes to fatal pulmonary oedema. To further improve occupational safety during use, Lutz-Jesco has developed the VakuStop – a vacuum regulator for dosing systems that is equipped with an emergency stop function to prevent uncontrolled chlorine gas leaks directly at the chlorine gas tank in the event of an emergency.
