Submersible water pump for harvesting rain water

09.03.2001

As one of the highlights at this year's ISH, KSB Aktiengesellschaft, Frankenthal, will present a submersible motor pump for floating-suction water intake with an external mains water back-up system to DIN 1988. The new Hya Rain U primarily caters to the needs of home owners who cannot employ a pump working by suction, because their rain water collection tank is located too far from the house. As the pump set is inside the tank and does not make any noise, the system is suitable for use close to living quarters.

A back-up module with a Class A air gap in compliance with the potable water specification of the German Association of the Gas and Water Sector, is mounted in the building and supplies the pump with the necessary water in prolonged periods of dry weather via an open inlet nozzle. A float switch informs the control unit integrated in the module whether the rain water tank still contains enough water, or whether it is time to feed the pump's polyethylene suction bell with fresh mains water.

The corrosion-resistant stainless steel pump sits on the floor of the water collection tank or reservoir. A plastic ball-type buoy ensures that the suction strainer attached to a flexible tube is kept in upright position just under the water surface, thus ensuring that the water withdrawn is either clean or turbid without sediments. Designed with a multistage hydraulic system, Hya Rain U is capable of generating pressures up to 4.5 bar, so that sprinkling, washing, flushing or irrigation systems can be directly supplied with the required inlet pressure. The maximum flow rate is 4,500 litres per hour. A double-acting mechanical seal fitted between the motor and the pump hydraulics protects the electric components against humidity, thus ensuring a long service life.
