Hydraulic Institute to Sponsor Nat´l Manufacturing Week – Introduces new standards and life cycle cost guidelines at Fluid Handling Pavilion

09.01.2001

PARSIPPANY, N.J., January 8, 2001 - In view of the prominent role that pumps play in manufacturing, the Hydraulic Institute (HI) announces plans to represent the pumping industry as a sponsor of National Manufacturing Week (NMW), taking place March 5-8, 2001 at Chicago’s McCormick Place Complex. As an association sponsor of the National Plant Engineering MRO & Management area of NMW, HI will specifically support the Fluid Handling Pavilion within the Plant area.

"After motors, pumps are the second most widely used machine in the world. NMW provides HI and its members with the ideal forum for introducing some of our newest products and services, and showing how they fit into the ‘bigger manufacturing picture’ of the new global marketplace. Our sponsorship of NMW furthers efforts to educate plant and facilities managers and design engineers on pumps and pumping standards, which is a primary function of our organization," said Robert Asdal, executive director of HI.

At NMW, HI members will showcase Year 2000 ANSI/HI Edition Pump Standards. Based on an American National Standard Institute (ANSI) canvass conducted over eighteen months, this edition contains the latest information on the full range of pump types, including definitions, industry terminology, design and application, installation, operation, maintenance guidelines and testing standards in U.S. and metric units.

"HI Standards are adopted in the public interest and are designed to help eliminate misunderstanding between the manufacturer, the purchaser, and/or the user. They also assist the purchaser in selecting and obtaining the proper product for a particular need," noted Asdal. "Very often, HI standards contain information that is unavailable from other sources."

Saving energy costs is also at the forefront of HI’s efforts. During NMW, several HI members will promote the latest findings of its life cycle cost analysis. A joint effort on behalf of the Hydraulic Institute (HI) and Europump, Pump Life Cycle Costs: A Guide to LCC Analysis for Pumping Systems presents engineering, design, specification and analytical methodologies for optimizing pump systems designs and maximizing pumping system lifetime cost savings.

Nearly 20 percent of the world’s electrical energy consumption is accounted for by pumping systems. What’s more, pump usage in individual plant installations accounts for as much as 25 to 50 percent of this country’s total energy consumption. Bringing today’s plant and facilities managers and engineers -- those individuals who recommend, specify and make the final purchasing decisions "critical information for energy and cost savings is paramount," said Asdal.

Registration details, including travel arrangements, are available at www.manufacturingweek.com. For additional questions, contact NMW Customer Service at 800-840-0678 or send an e-mail to: inquiry.nmw@reedexpo.com.

The Hydraulic Institute, established in 1917, is the largest association of pump producers and leading suppliers in North America, serving member companies and pump users by providing product standards and valuable forums for the exchange of industry information. HI has been developing pump standards for over 80 years.
